Rimac’s new hypercar specs reportedly unveiled, doesn’t compete with next-gen Tesla Roadster

Rimac has been teasing its new hypercar, another all-electric vehicle built from the ground up by the Croatian company to follow the Concept_One, over the last few months.

Now the specs have reportedly been revealed ahead of the official unveiling and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to compete with the upcoming next-gen Tesla Roadster.

After Tesla unveiled its next-gen Roadster prototype and demonstrated its insane capabilities, it virtually set a new benchmark for hypercars coming out in the next few years.

Now a report by Autocar, which cites an unnamed source but also comments from Rimac COO Monika Mikac, claims that the vehicle will have a 120 kWh battery pack.

That’s a significant 33% increase over the Concept_One’s 90 kWh pack, but it falls short of the new Tesla Roadster’s 200 kWh battery pack, which enables ‘a range of over 620 miles’ (1000 km) and powers its insane performance specs, like 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds and a top speed of over 250 mph.

The report also claims that Rimac changed its targets for the vehicle after Tesla unveiled the Roadster, but they still plan to unveil it and bring it to market this year.

Autocar also claims that it will feature level 4 autonomous driving – something that Tesla also claims the Roadster will be capable through software update under its Autopilot 2.0 program.

Furthermore, Mikac also confirmed that the new vehicle will be “a little bit bigger than the Concept One, but still a two-seater.” She also said that it will cost more than the $1 million Concept_One and they plan to limit the production to 100 units or about 10 times more than their previous vehicle.

Electrek’s Take

If all of this is true, then I think it’s clear that it’s not something that will compete with the next-gen Tesla Roadster.

With a 120 kWh battery pack, the vehicle could still feature some impressive performance specs, but nothing like the power that a vehicle can unleash and sustain with over 60% more energy capacity.

We are also talking about a 4-seater versus a 2-seater and a $1 million+ versus a $200,000 car.

But I don’t think it will mean that Rimac’s new vehicle is doomed. They are going after a different market of super-rich people who want to own collection cars with limited production runs.

Also, if the vehicle is really available by the end of the year, they can beat the new Roadster to market by almost 2 years. Though I find it weird that they say they adjusted their targets for the vehicle after the Roadster unveiling even though they plan to release the vehicle within a year.
