Tesla confirms Model 3 wheel options, optional Glass Roof, and coil suspension

Over the weekend, Tesla confirmed a new series of options for the Model 3 after confirming last week that they plan to limit the number of configurations to fewer than 100 compared to the Model S’ more than 1,500 different configurations.

They confirmed that there will be two wheel size options, an optional glass roof, and coil suspension.

When Tesla listed the comparison between the Model S and Model 3, they listed some of Model S’ “premium features”, which made it sound like the Model 3 wouldn’t have those features.

The company has now updated the comparison to clarify the situation.

They modified the ones listed under the Model S and added some under Model 3:

  • Full Self-Driving Capability
  • Aluminum and Steel Body
  • Coil Suspension
  • Optional Glass Roof
  • 18″ or 19″ Wheels

Here’s the chart from last week (left) and the updated version from today (hat tip to Jason):

Some we already knew about, like the Full Self-Driving Capability since Tesla confirmed that all its vehicles going forward will have its latest generation of Autopilot hardware since October 2016.

Other updates clarify things that we already knew, like the mention of the “aluminum body” for the Model S was to highlight the fact that the Model 3 has both aluminum and steel.

On the other hand, the last three points include new information.

We knew that the Model 3 would have a glass roof, but it was never clear if whether or not it would be standard or an option since CEO Elon Musk only referred to the glass roof at the unveiling and all other Model 3 prototypes seen so far, including the recent release candidates, only had a glass roof.

Now it seems that it will be offered only has an option – presumably with a metal roof standard. Tesla removed the metal roof option on the Model S last year – leaving only the glass roof and the panoramic glass roof.

The mention of a “coil suspension”, which is also the standard on the Model S, makes it sound like the Model 3 will not have a premium option of an air suspension.

Finally, Tesla confirmed that they will offer 18″ and 19″ wheel options for the Model 3 – compared to the Model S’ 19″ and 21″.

Interestingly, Tesla makes it clear that the Model 3 will have fewer premium features, standard or available as options, on the Model 3, but at the same time, the list of comparison also seems to only address the base version of the Model 3 when it comes to range and performance. Therefore, there could be some surprises later on for the performance version.
