Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been promising an Easter Egg in an upcoming software update, which has already been pushed to some cars, that would enable an even quicker 0 to 60 mph acceleration in the already “Quickest Production Car”, the Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous.
The new mode has been referred to as ‘Ludicrous+‘ by Musk.
It unlocks, purely through software, about 35 more horsepower in the 4-door sedan – for now a total output of ~573 kW (780 hp).
As promised, it brings the 0-60 time down to 2.4 seconds from the previous 2.5 seconds if you don’t round it up.
Brooks from DragTimes got the update and with the help of Jason Hughes, he managed to activate the new feature through the Easter Egg, which is actually the same Easter Egg that activates the “warp speed” effect on the center screen.
You simply have to hold the ‘Ludicrous’ button on the settings page for 5 seconds and after the warp speed effect is gone, the system will prompt the following message:
The message is particularly interesting considering the recent revelation that Tesla limits the power of performance vehicles after too many launches with ‘launch mode’.
At least, now they are making the impact on the components very clear.
After accepting the consequences and pressing ‘Yes, bring it on!’, you will get a new screen on the instrument cluster with more information about the battery pack:
DragTimes was able to get a 0-60 time of 2.465 seconds. That’s the only test he was able to perform due to the weather in Florida, but we can expect some quarter-mile tests and a few drag races in the near future.
Here’s the full video:
That’s some crazy impressing acceleration for any car, but when you consider that the Model S is a 5,000 lbs 4-door sedan, it clearly demonstrates the advantage of an electric powertrain for instant acceleration.
The fact that it was enabled through an over-the-air software update is also particularly interesting.
