Some Tesla owners are reporting that insurance companies are not listing the proper trim level of their Model S, which can result in a higher premium depending on the situation. The issue was first brought up yesterday by Youtuber KmanAuto, but other Tesla owners have since reported similar problems.
Kman reports that instead of having him listed as a Model S 90D, his insurer had him listed as a Model S P90D with Ludicrous – the highest and most expensive trim of the Model S. There’s a $30,000 difference between the 2 models and he expects to get around $200 back from his last 6 months of insurance.
He suggests that Tesla owners should contact their insurer and verify what Model S trim they have listed for their vehicles.
It’s something that is not necessarily surprising for a relatively new vehicle with a somewhat unconventional trim level system. It will also be interesting to see how insurers handle the new software-limited battery pack scheme. You can now buy a Tesla Model S or X with a 75 kWh battery pack software-limited to 60 kWh. The sticker price being less than the actual value of the vehicle pre-upgrade creates an interesting situation.
Here’s Kman’s video on the problem:
