BMW confirms all-electric iX3 SUV will be built in China and exported to other markets, signs massive battery contract

When BMW unveiled the all-electric iX3 SUV in Beijing earlier this year, the German automaker’s plan for the vehicle wasn’t clear outside of China.

Now they have confirmed that the upcoming new electric vehicle will be built in China and exported to other markets as the automaker confirms a massive new battery contract for the production of its new electric vehicles.

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), China’s largest automotive battery maker, has been making strides in the past few years thanks to the country’s rapid deployment of electric vehicles.

The company is now reportedly aiming to become the world’s largest automotive battery maker with a new factory financed by an initial public offering (IPO) valued at $2 billion.

Last year, Apple was rumored to be working on an autonomous all-electric car codenamed ‘Project Titan’. The company later confirmed development work on an autonomous driving platform and CEO Tim Cook even referred to it as “a core technology” for the company, but it showed signs of giving up on developing an actual car.

But now Apple is reportedly working on electric car batteries with China’s biggest battery maker.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a relatively new Chinese li-ion battery maker, is shaping up to become a major player in the industry in the coming years with plans for several important battery factories comparable in size to Tesla’s Gigafactory.

The company has now signed a supply contract with SAAB successor National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) in order for the electric vehicle maker to deliver on its orders for electric car fleets in China.
