Porsche wants to push new electric vehicle metric with the Taycan: range per 24hr with charging

The metrics of comparison are changing in the auto industry with the electric revolution. The range is an obvious one and another that Tesla has been pushing is the 0-60 mph acceleration, which they have basically mastered.

Now Porsche wants to push a different electric vehicle metric with the Taycan: range per 24 hours with charging.

In an interview with Germany’s auto motor und sport this week, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said that acceleration is just one of the metrics they are looking at:

“With the Taycan, we set the same high standards as all other models. And acceleration is just one of many features that sets our products apart from the competition. The possibilities range from design and quality to driving dynamics and suspension design. The power electronics and the voltage system will also give a very clear differentiation in electric motors. Alone with the 800 volt system, we already generate significant advantages in the charging times, because I can load twice as fast with twice the current.”

Blume added that this competitive advantage is leading them to push for a new comparison point.

The CEO says that he wants people to like range per 24 hours:

“With the Taycan, we will also specify a value for how many kilometers you can drive in 24 hours – charging time included. I can tell you that even though we have consistently driven at 200 km/h in our tests, we are well above the values that are known in the market today. For our customers, this has the great advantage that they can calculate how far down they can come, for example, in six hours. And how fast they can drive then.”

High speeds like 200 km/h can reduce the range significantly, but Porsche believes that the Taycan will be really competitive over a longer period of times due to its charging speed.

The Porsche Taycan is expected to have a base range of around 250 miles (400 km) and it should be able to charge at up to 80% in just 15 minutes.

The vehicle is expected to go into production in late 2019.

Electrek’s Take

That’s an interesting approach. Even though there are several different long-range EV options on the market right now, Tesla has for the longest time been the only good option for a vehicle able to do road trips.

The combination of a long range on a single charge plus the capacity to charge at over 100 kW on an extensive network of charging stations is what truly enables driving long distances with an electric vehicle.

With its range and ultra fast-charging, the Porsche Taycan certainly has the potential to push that to new levels.

I am curious to see what kind of marketing they are going to do with that ‘range per 24hr with charging’ metric. It could be interesting.
