GM CEO Mary Barra made a series of announcement today about the “future of personal mobility”, most notable of which a new plan for autonomous Chevy Volt to be available to GM employees to drive on private property next year.
A fleet of 2017 Volt equipped with GM’s self-driving technology will be made available in late 2016 for GM employees to reserve through a new car-sharing app and drive around the company’s Warren Technical Center campus in Michigan. The announcement is part of a push on two fronts for the company: self-driving and car-sharing.
GM is launching a new car-sharing app available through a select few projects including “Let’s Drive NYC“, which makes 10 Chevy cars available to the residents of The Ritz Plaza in New York.
On the “self-driving” side, on top of the trial project with the 2017 Volt, the company also announced that its hand-free highway driving mode, the “Super Cruise”, will be available in the 2017 Cadillac CT6.
GM’s “Super Cruise” is similar to Tesla’s ‘Autopilot’, which is currently being tested by early access owners and should be pushed to Tesla’s fleet by the end of the month. You can read our exclusive look at the ‘Autopilot’ here.
GM expects to “strengthen its core business” through these self-driving and car-sharing initiatives.
CEO Mary Barra on the announcement:
“The convergence of rapidly improving technology and changing consumer preferences is creating an inflection point for the transportation industry not seen in decades. Some might find this massive change to be daunting, but we look at it and see the opportunity to be a disruptor. We believe our decades of leadership in vehicle connectivity is fundamental to our quest to redefine the future of personal mobility.”
