After launching the first mass-produced EV with a semi-solid-state battery last year, SAIC Motor is following it up with the new MG 4X electric SUV.

At the Chengdu Auto Show last year, SAIC launched the new MG4, deeming it “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” electric vehicle.
Deliveries began in China in December 2025, priced from 102,800 yuan ($14,500) for the semi-solid-state battery variant. The standard MG4 starts at just 68,800 yuan ($9,800).
All other MG4 variants are powered by either a 42.8 kWh or a 53.95 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing CLTC ranges of 437 km (271 miles) and 530 km (330 miles), respectively.
The semi-solid-state model, on the other hand, uses a 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery, delivering 530 km (330 miles) of CLTC range.
On Tuesday, SAIC announced that the first electric SUV will join the MG4 family. The MG 4X will also use a semi-solid-state battery, the company said, even in the entry-level model.



While no other details were released, SAIC said the electric SUV “boasts a range starting 510 kilometers (316 miles)” under CLTC conditions.
The MG 4X looks a bit bigger than the standard model, with a more upright, taller stance you would expect from an SUV.

SAIC will reveal more details soon, with an expected launch by the end of Q2 2026. The standard MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. It is about the size of the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.
The MG 4X’s interior is expected to feature plenty of digital screens and the latest safety and convenience features.

Since the new MG4 with a semi-solid state battery features a massive 15.6″ central infotainment display with 2.5K resolution, you can expect to see about the same from the upcoming SUV.
The automaker previously said that by reducing the liquid electrolyte content to just 5%, the semi-solid-state EV battery significantly reduces the risk of combustion and improves the cycle life.
During two needle penetration tests, the battery produced no smoke, fires, or explosions after two hours, which SAIC MG said was an industry first and exceeded industry standards by 20%.
