BYD’s new Blade EV Battery 2.0 unlocks 1,000+ km pure electric range and ultra-fast charging

BYD’s ultra-luxe electric sedan, the Yangwang U7, will be the first to feature the new Blade Battery 2.0. The new EV battery boasts a pure electric range of 1,006 km (625 miles) under CLTC conditions.

BYD Blade Battery 2.0 delivers 1,000+ km of EV range

After overtaking Tesla last year, BYD officially claimed the global EV sales leader crown for the first time. However, BYD’s sales growth in China has slowed over the past few months with a flood of new domestic EVs hitting the market.

To recapture its momentum, the company is developing new batteries, charging systems that are just as fast as filling up at a gas station, smart driving features, and more.

During its “Disruptive Technology” event on March 5, we will get our first look at several exciting projects and vehicles BYD will roll out over the next few months.

That will include the new BYD Blade Battery 2.0. BYD’s luxury brand confirmed on social media that the Yangwang U7 will be the first to feature the second-generation Blade Battery.

Zheng Yu, Product Director of BYD Yangwang, said the new battery achieves “an ultra-long pure electric range of 1,006 km,” under CLTC conditions. That’s a considerable improvement from the roughly 600 km (373 miles) CLTC range in the first-generation Blade Battery.

“Why does the ‘impossible triangle’ of performance, range, and fast charging exist in electric vehicles?” Yu asked, “The core issue lies in battery physics constraints.”

According to Yu, BYD’s 150 kW Blade Battery 2.0, in addition to its high-voltage platform and upgraded thermal management system, solves the problem in the new Yangwang U7. The setup delivers “four-motor high performance and over 1,000 km of range,” he added.

The announcement comes after BYD’s other luxury sub-brand, Denza, claimed the new Z9 GT is the “world’s longest pure electric driving range vehicle” with a CLTC range of up to 1,036 km (644 miles) on a single charge.

Electrek’s Take

Yes, the 1,000+ km driving range is under CLTC conditions, but over 1,000 km (620 miles) is still well beyond what the average driver needs.

~500 miles real world. Great. Lovely. The real key here? Now, the Yangwang U7 can pivot to lowering costs with EVERY battery improvement. That is the magic. We have arrived.

On the WLTP scale, it would be about 900 km (559 miles), and on the US EPA rating system, around 725 km (450 miles). Again, that’s more than enough for an average week (or for some, a month+) commute.

One thing is certain: As batteries and related tech continue to advance, EVs will only get safer, smarter, more efficient, and more affordable.

As BYD expands overseas, the new tech will help give its vehicles an extra edge, and that could be the spark it needs to drive growth this year. Check back tomorrow, March 5, for a full breakdown.
