The new Jeep Cherokee returns as a hybrid while EVs are put on the sidelines

The Jeep Cherokee is back after a two-year hiatus, and it’s now a hybrid. For the 2026 model year, Jeep upgraded the SUV with an all-new hybrid powertrain providing over 500 miles of range. Meanwhile, Jeep’s electric vehicles are being put on the back burner.

Meet the new 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee hybrid

Jeep introduced the new and improved 2026 Cherokee on Thursday as it looks to revamp the brand. The rugged SUV maker is betting on its latest models to charge up sales with added tech, features, and more.

The 2026 Cherokee is the first Jeep vehicle with its new hybrid powertrain. Powered by an ICE engine, two electric motors, and a battery, the 1.6-liter turbo-four hybrid engine delivers 210 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque.

Jeep claims it will provide over 500 miles of range with an estimated 37 mpg, which is “greater than many Jeep Cherokee competitors,” according to the company.

That’s just one of the upgrades. The 2026 Jeep Cherokee boasts more interior space, advanced new tech, and a fresh style inside and out.

Although it still retains the brand’s iconic design, the new Cherokee has been given a fresh look. The SUV sits more upright and is also longer and taller than its predecessor. The front now features LED headlights with DRLs that create a U-pattern.

The interior features a 10.25″ driver cluster and a 12.3″ infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Every new Cherokee comes with Stellantis’ new Connect Once connected services package, which includes 10 years of OTA updates.

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is available in four trims: Cherokee, Laredo, Limited, and Overland. The 2026 Cherokee base model starts at $36,995 (including a $1,995 destination fee), followed by the Laredo, which starts at $39,995.

Later this year, the new Cherokee Limited and Overland trims will arrive at US dealerships, starting at $42,495 and $45,995, respectively. The entry-level model and Laredo trims are scheduled to arrive in early 2026.

Electrek’s Take

The new Jeep Cherokee hybrid arrives as Stellantis is reportedly already cutting production on its all-electric vehicles, as well as a few other hybrid models.

"2026 Cherokee base model starts at $36,995" and Wagoneer S, which is basically Cherokee EV, starts at $67,195. I don't think there is a way for the battery to cost that much.

According to dealer reports (via ClubAlfa), Stellantis has suspended or significantly reduced orders for the Jeep Wagoneer S, Dodge Charger Daytona EV, and plug-in Wrangler, Cherokee, and Chrysler Pacifica models.

The move comes as Stellantis prepares for the expiration of the $7,500 EV tax credit at the end of September. Stellantis’ sales fell 10% in the first half of 2025 in the US. Will the new Jeep Cherokee hybrid jump-start the brand? That’s what it’s hoping for.

In the meantime, Jeep is offering over $15,000 in savings on the 2025 Wagoneer S. The offer includes the $7,500 tax credit and expires on September 2. Or you can opt for 0% APR plus the $7,500 tax credit.
