Volkswagen issued another recall affecting more than 22,500 ID.4 models. Until a fix is ready, it recommends owners charge the battery to no more than 80%.
Volkswagen ID.4 hit with another battery recall
After recalling nearly 100,000 electric vehicles globally earlier this year over potential battery issues, including nearly 44,000 ID.4s in the US, Volkswagen’s electric SUV has been hit with another recall.
In a letter sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on October 6, VW said it planned to recall 22,524 ID.4 SUVs for model years 2023 to 2026.
Although the root cause is still unknown, VW said charging the high-voltage battery to over 80% of its capacity in certain models in the affected range could trigger “thermal propagation,” or, in other words, a fire within the battery.
Until a fix is available, VW is urging owners to limit vehicle charging to 80%. The company said the recall follows another field study as part of an ongoing review of Volkswagen vehicles not included in previous battery recall campaigns.

The Volkswagen Group Product Safety Committee requested “additional clarifications” from the battery cell supplier, SK Battery America, about production and a potential clean date.
In the US, Volkswagen said it had received 22 claims between January 18, 2024, and August 07, 2026.

Volkswagen is still working on a remedy. Letters informing owners of the safety risks are expected to be mailed out on November 27, 2026. Volkswagen will send additional letters once a fix is available.
In the meantime, owners can contact Volkswagen’s customer service at 1-800-893-5298 with any questions or concerns. VW’s recall number is 93EX.
