Volkswagen’s electric minibus will not return for the 2027 model year as expected, after another delay.
Volkswagen pushes back ID. Buzz comeback in the US
The ID. Buzz first went on sale in the US in 2024 as an all-electric reinterpretation of Volkswagen’s iconic minibus.
While many were excited to see Volkswagen finally bring the electric minibus to the US, the initial hype, mostly driven by nostalgia, quickly faded.
Volkswagen struggled to sell the ID. Buzz for several reasons. For one, it wasn’t exactly cheap, starting at about $60,000, plus it offered a limited range of up to 234 miles.
While that’s plenty for an average day’s commute, families planning a trip or weekend getaway are more likely to choose a larger SUV, like the Kia EV9 or Hyundai IONIQ 9, both of which offer over 300 miles of range.
Last year, Volkswagen sold just 6,140 ID. Buzz’s in the US, leading to an overflow of inventory at dealers.
Volkswagen Group of America VP and chief communications officer, Jeannine Ginivan, told Electrek in December that the ID. Buzz would not receive a 2026 model year in the US. Instead, the company was planning to move straight to the 2027 model.
Ginivan insisted that “Volkswagen is not canceling the ID. Buzz for the US market,” adding that the company had “sufficient inventory” of 2026 models to sell.
According to an Automotive News report on Thursday, Volkswagen is now pushing back the return of the ID. Buzz for the US until the 2028 model year. Volkswagen informed dealers of the delayed timing on September 24.
Earlier this year, Volkswagen even revealed updates for the 2027 ID. Buzz, including a new Tourer model designed for overnight stays and NACS capability.
As AN reported, Cars.com lists just 38 new 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz models that are available nationwide in the US.
Volkswagen’s other electric vehicle, the ID.4, is also not receiving a 2027 model year as the automaker revamps its lineup.
