University at Buffalo adds electric buses to Stampede Fleet

The University at Buffalo is celebrating the deployment of eight new 40-foot electric transit buses, which are now quietly transporting students, staff, and campus visitors per day. The buses are the first in UB’s Stampede fleet to ditch diesel, kicking off a four-year effort to electrify the university’s campus transportation system.

Along with solutions provider WeDriveU and fleet electrification specialists Zenobē, the University at Buffalo’s newest buses are-catching and emissions-free, and are the first of the UB Stampede fleet to transition away from diesel fuel.

“Our goal is to provide safe, reliable transportation while continuing to reduce our environmental impact,” said Christopher Austin, UB Director of Parking and Transportation. “These buses help us do both. They improve the rider experience today and represent another investment in the future of mobility at UB.”

The new electric buses are anticipated to serve some 16,000 passengers per day, and are just the start of the full UB Stampede fleet’s full transition to electric as part of UB’s 10 in 10 roadmap for a zero-emissions campus by 2030 – a date that, you may notice, is fully 15 years ahead of the 2045 deadline set under New York Executive Order 22 for heavy-duty vehicles.

“Fleet operators and institutions need confidence that their electric buses will be ready to perform every day,” said Matt Curwood, Vice President, Business Development – Transit, Zenobē North America. “Zenobē’s giving that certainty through thoughtful planning, reliable charging infrastructure and long-term operational support. It’s gratifying to see UB’s fleet in service.”

The eight new additions to the Stampede fleet are expected to cut nearly ~6,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, representing a 55.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with diesel-powered service – a reduction approximately equivalent to removing 1,395 gas-powered cars from the road.
