A free frunk? Ford says not so fast

If you want a frunk with your 2026 Mustang Mach-E, it won’t be free. Ford is charging extra for the front trunk on 2026 models.

Ford drops the free frunk for the 2026 Mustang Mach-E

Ford said it wanted to lower EV prices, but didn’t say it would charge extra for a basic frunk. Since electric vehicles don’t have a massive internal combustion engine to cool, most have an extra storage space up front.

For the 2026 Mustang Mach-E, Ford is charging an additional $495 to add the frunk. The frunk is now listed under “Exterior Options,” alongside other upgrades such as molded splash guards (+$340), bumper protection (+$165), and a custom windshield sunscreen (+$140).

Why is Ford charging extra? Speaking with The Electric Duo in December, Teddy Ankeny, Ford’s new Mustang Mach-E brand manager, said it was to help drivers save a little on upfront EV costs.

Ford found that drivers were not using the frunk as much as they had expected, so the company made it an optional feature for the 2026 Mach-E.

The 2026 Mustang Mach-E GT is about $1,000 cheaper than the outgoing model, starting at $53,395. The base Mach-E Select RWD is priced from $37,795, the same as the 2025 model year. Ford also added a new California Edition to the 2026 Mustang Mach-E lineup for the first time, starting at $55,890.

Aftermarket kits will be less than half the price and many will be better quality than OEM.
