With production set to begin later this year, Lucid Motors (LCID) has built the first prototypes for its midsize EV. The new models will start at around $50,000 as Lucid expands into new segments.
Lucid builds the first midsize EV prototypes
After overcoming the production hurdles that hampered production of its first SUV, the Gravity, Lucid is preparing to introduce its long-awaited midsize EV platform.
We knew it would underpin at least a few vehicles after Lucid told Electrek back in 2024 that the platform would wear at least three “top hats,” or different models.
During a fireside chat at the UBS Global Industrials and Transportation Conference, Lucid’s CFO, Taoufiq Boussaid, said the three midsize EVs would be positioned in “the heart of the market,” starting at around $50,000.
The first of which will be a crossover SUV. Lucid previewed the new midsize SUV last year with a design similar to the Gravity, but with a sloped rear roofline, giving it an almost coupe-like feel.

According to Lucid’s communication boss, Nick Twork, the first full midsize prototypes have been built. Twork posted on X, saying he “Spent time in our prototype build area today watching the first full Lucid midsize vehicles come together.”
The midsize EVs will share the same Lucid DNA as the Air and Gravity, such as space, efficiency, dynamics, and range, but in a more affordable package, Twork explained.
Twork’s comments mirror Boussaid’s remarks last month. Although the midsize EVs are aimed at a different market, they will “remain a premium product” because that’s what sets Lucid apart.

Unlike the Air and Gravity, the new models will be built on the back of a platform, enabling Lucid to cut costs while making it easier to scale.
Lucid plans to begin production of the midsize platform at its manufacturing plant in Saudi Arabia toward the end of this year or in early 2027. In 2029, it is expected to be at full capacity.
Following the crossover, the second midsize model will be a more rugged SUV that takes influence from the Gravity X Concept. Although the third has yet to be confirmed, it is rumoured to be a midsize sedan to rival the Tesla Model 3.

We will learn more during Lucid Investor Day on March 12, where the company will “go deep on our roadmap, core tech platforms, software and autonomy advancements, and how our midsize platform will unlock the next phase of Lucid’s growth,” Twork said.
The new midsize models are coming at a crucial time as Lucid aims to enter its next growth phase. After overcoming production hurdles in the first half of 2025, Lucid ramped up output in the final few months of the year to hit its goal of producing 18,000 vehicles.
Lucid produced a record 8,412 EVs in Q4, bringing its 2025 total to 18,378, more than double the roughly 9,000 it made in 2024. The upcoming midsize models, starting at around $50,000, will help Lucid tap into a new market of buyers.
