Volvo reveals EX60 SUV, its fastest charging EV yet – and an offroad surprise

Volvo has revealed the full look and specs of its upcoming EX60, fitting into the upper-middle segment of its electric product line, made with new megacasting technology and with class-leading range and charging performance.

We already saw some of the EX60’s specs earlier this month, with Volvo announcing that the car will be its fastest-charging and longest-range EV yet. The car can add up to 173 miles of range in 10 minutes on a 400kW, 800V charger, and in the US will be the first Volvo vehicle to come default with a NACS charging port (other Volvo EVs can use an adapter to use NACS chargers/Tesla Superchargers).

It will come in three powertrain variants, with the P12 AWD having 400 miles of electric range from an absurdly large 117kWh battery, P10 AWD with 320 miles and 95kWh, and P6 RWD at 310 miles and 83kWh. All lose 100-25 miles of range if you get bigger, less efficient wheels. Every variant has a 10 year battery warranty.

Each of the three batteries is capable of charging from 10-80% in under 20 minutes on a sufficiently fast charger, putting it up there with the fastest-charging cars on the road today. All come with a 19.2kW onboard AC charger, for quick at-home charging (and you might need it with that giant 117kWh battery).

In terms of exterior dimensions, the car fits exactly where you might expect it to: bigger than the EX30 and 40, smaller than the EX90. Yay numbers.

Size specs (inches)EX30EX40EX60EX90
Length166.7174.8189.1198.3
Height61.165.264.568.8
Width (w/o mirrors)72.373.874.877.3
Ground Clearance6.56.97.28.5

Performance is plenty quick even on the base P6 model, capable of 0-60 in 5.7 seconds. The P10 gets there in 4.4 seconds, and the P12 in 3.8 seconds.

The interior has that Scandinavian sparseness that you might expect, and seems spacious from the photos we were sent. As one has come to expect of EVs, there is frunk storage (nicely partitioned, so you can carry emergency items and still have space for more) and also underfloor storage in the rear.

Volvo claims the EX60’s infotainment system is “no-lag,” which I love to hear, but we’ll have to report back on whether that’s true or not when we get a chance to test one out. The car is powered by NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX Orin platform and a Qualcomm 8255 CPU, with Google Gemini built-in for conversational AI voice recognition (if you’re into that sort of thing). Volvo calls it its “most intelligent car yet.”

And impressively enough, Volvo says that the EX60’s carbon footprint is on par with its smaller sibling, the EX30, with the two having the lowest carbon cost of any car the company makes. This is due to new battery technology that increases energy density and reduces carbon footprint of the battery, and due to a new megacasting process that simplifies manufacturing significantly.

Volvo EX60 cross country variant lets you explore with less impact

Finally, Volvo announced a special variant of the EX60: the EX60 Cross Country, a more off-road focused variant, available in an exclusive light “frost green” color.

It has 20mm (.8in) more ground clearance, with an additional 20mm more available with raised air suspension (which can also be lowered at high speeds). It has a wider track and wheel arches, and black moulding over the wheel arch to give a more rugged look.

Underneath the car, a reinforced steel skid plate at front and rear will help deflect any errant rocks.

That said, most of the press photos Volvo sent us for the cross country model were posed on paved roads, so we’re thinking more along the lines of light off-roading/camping rather than particularly serious backcountry adventures.

The Cross Country will be available in two trims – P10 AWD with 300 miles of range, or P12 AWD with “longer range” (TBD).

While we don’t yet have a full price breakdown, Volvo says it comes “really well-equipped around $60k,” and states the P10 AWD Plus trim comes with

  • 21-Speaker Bose Premium sound system
  • 15” Curved OLED center display with Google built-in
  • Large panoramic roof
  • 360° camera
  • 20” 5-spoke diamond cut wheels
  • Pilot Assist
  • 3-zone climate control
  • Metallic Paint
  • Active suspension
  • 19.2 kW onboard charger

Each powertrain selection will come with a further upmarket “Ultra” trim, and select variants will have a downmarket “Core” trim announced at a later date (thus, the aforementioned P10 AWD Plus seems right smack in the middle of the EX60’s offerings).

While the cars have been revealed today, they’re not yet in production – that starts in April for the P6 and P10 variants with deliveries starting in summer, with the P12 coming later in the year. The EX60 is available for pre-orders now in European markets, with US orders to open in late spring.

The Volvo EX60 isn’t in dealerships yet, but its right-sized cousin the EX30 is available now. If you’re looking to get into Volvo’s hot hatch, use our link to find a Volvo EX30 near you. Or, while you’re there, you can ask your local dealer to put you on a list to contact when they get the EX60 in stock – it’ll be a few months, though.
