Hyundai’s new Inster EV Cross is a bold twist on the electric city car

Hyiundai’s new Inster EV Cross isn’t just another electric car to drive around town. It’s built for more than just getting to work and back. With a rugged design, added features, and over 220 miles (360 km) of all-electric range, Hyundai’s new Inster EV Cross can tackle all your “mini-adventures.”

After unveiling its new Inster EV (known as the Casper Electric in Korea) at the Busan International Mobility Show in June, Hyundai’s electric city car stole the show.

Despite its small size — just 3,825 mm long (that’s even smaller than the Chevy Bolt EV, which is 4,145 mm) — Hyundai vows the Inster EV has the “potential to accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles.”

Hyundai opened pre-orders in Korea this summer, starting at just $23,000 (31.5 million won). With incentives, Hyundai’s sub-compact EV can be bought for under $15,000 (20 million won).

Powered by a 49 kWh battery, the electric city car gets up to 195 miles (315 km) range in Korea. In Europe, the Inster EV is rated with up to 221 miles (355 km) WLTP range. Hyundai’s Inster EV starts at around $30,000 (£23,500) in Europe as one of the most affordable electric options.

The new outdoor-focused model still offers Inster EV’s versatility but with added design elements and features to tackle all “mini-adventures in the outdoors.”

Hyundai’s Inster EV Cross includes rugged new front and rear bumpers, black claddings, skid plates, 17″ alloy wheels, and a roof rack. It also has an available roof basket to haul camping gear, sports equipment, or other items.

The new off-road variant will be offered with exclusive exterior colors, including a sleek Amazonas Green Matte.

Inside, the Inster EV Cross will include a special grey cloth with a lime-yellow accent trim combination. A lime-yellow accent on the dashboard complements the color scheme.

Hyundai’s new trim offers a WLTP range of up to 223 mi (360 km) and can fast charge (10% to 80%) in around 30 minutes to get you back on your adventures.

The Inster Cross comes with added features that are “more common in cars in higher segments,” including Hyundai’s ADAS package. The package includes Highway Driving Assist 1.5, Smart Cruise Control, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.

Hyundai will begin building the new variant later this year at its manufacturing plant in Korea. Deliveries are expected to kick off shortly after in Europe.
