Daimler Trucks North America is going electric with some massive all-electric trucks and now it appears to be working on a charging system with an impressive rate ‘up to 3MW.’
Daimler, one of the world’s largest truck makers, has been feeling the pressure from Tesla’s electric truck — going as far as saying that if the claims Tesla is making about its electric semi truck are true, they are breaking the laws of physics.
The German truck manufacturer answered back with the launch of its own electric truck group along with the unveiling of two more electric trucks, including an electric version of their Cascadia to compete with Tesla Semi.
Last year, Daimler started delivering its first all-electric Freightliner trucks to its customer partners to test the new vehicles.
Now, they are working on high-powered charging systems to charge those big electric trucks and according to a job listing for a ‘eMobility Senior Engineer — Vehicle Charging Systems’, they want some crazy power:
“Lead future strategy, concepts, and innovation for next generation advanced charging systems, including strategies for very high power charging up to 3 MW.”
For comparison, Tesla is developing its own charging system for the Tesla Semi electric truck called ‘Megacharger’, which is estimated to have a chargnig capacity of about 1 MW.
In the pitch for the job, Daimler says that it would be part of the team to “push the envelope” for commercial electric vehicles:
“We are compelled to persistently push the envelope as we sharpen our focus on electric mobility (eMobility) and develop vehicles that lead the market. DTNA has created a startup team to bring our vision to reality. This team exudes creativity, energy, innovation, and passion. Last week, it was announced that Daimler will convert its existing factory in Portland to manufacture the company’s all-electric Freightliner trucks.
