Tesla Pickup truck is coming later this year, sticking with ‘futuristic’ design, says Musk

Tesla’s electric pickup truck is going to be unveiled later this year and it will feature the mysterious futuristic design that CEO Elon Musk has been talking about for a while now.

Over the past year, Musk has been tentatively guiding that Tesla’s Pickup truck is going to be unveiled in 2019.

He hinted at an accelerated plan for Tesla to bring an electric pickup to market

With Rivian already taking up a lot of mindshare in the electric pickup truck market and pushing some legacy automakers to accelerate their own electrification effort in the space, some see that Tesla would do good to show what they have planned for the segment.

Now, it sounds like Tesla is really pushing to unveil the truck this year.

Following the announcement that Model Y will be unveiled next week, Musk said that it will be coming later this year:

That’s the clearest Tesla’s CEO has been about the launch of the Tesla Pickup truck. Earlier this year, he also tentatively said that it could happen during the summer.

Musk also reiterated that the pickup his Tesla’s favorite upcoming vehicle:

He also said that they still plan for it to have a futuristic design.

Last year, Musk bewildered many when he said that the Tesla Pickup Truck will have a ‘really futuristic-like cyberpunk Blade Runner’ design.

We also already know quite a bit about the Tesla Pickup Truck’s specs after Musk sought suggestions about the vehicle in development and shared some of the targeted specs.

He talked about it being a 6-seater “big truck” with an option for 400 to 500 miles of range, “maybe higher”.

While it now seems clear that the unveiling is targeted for this year, the actual timeline to production is still unclear.

Electrek’s Take

The Tesla Pickup Truck intrigues me a lot.

Musk is a master at creating hype and I don’t often hear him playing down products, which is why it’s strange to see him anticipates that people might not like the truck’s design.

Yet, he still maintains that it is Tesla’s upcoming products that he’s most excited about.

Either way, I am still confident that it is going to be an important product that is going to help push the American auto industry to electrified their most popular segment – pickup trucks.

We have already heard some encouraging things from GM and Ford.
