Tesla’s referral program was supposed to end a week ago, but the automaker is now extending it for a second time as it attempts to boost demand in its end of the year push.
As we reported last week, the latest round of Tesla’s referral program was supposed to end on December 10th, but the automaker gave buyers one more week (until December 17th) to use a referral code and get 6 months of free Supercharging with new Model S, Model X, and Model 3 orders.
Now Tesla is extending the program again – this time for two weeks.
The automaker updated the program’s support page:
“Related vehicle order must be placed between May 19, 2017 and December 31, 2018.”
While Tesla generally updates the referral program with new incentives, it’s never a guarantee and therefore, the 6 months of free Supercharging serves as an incentive to place an order by the end of the year.
Normally, new orders over the last two weeks wouldn’t make a big difference on deliveries, but Elon Musk announced last weekend that Tesla is releasing its fleet vehicles for sale to help deliveries before the tax credit phase-out, which starts next year.
Furthermore, we reported that Tesla still has some inventory vehicles available in a few markets.
Those vehicles can be delivered much faster and now they can still be ordered with a referral code to get the 6 months of free Supercharging.
Electrek’s Take
I see the Tesla shorts loving to see the company pulling on demand levers around the end of the year even though the start of the phase-out of the Federal tax credit is a great external demand lever.
But I think they might be looking at it the wrong way. I know, shocker!
Tesla might need to increase demand not because it has fallen but because production has increased faster than anticipated in the last few weeks.
