If you have been following Electrek for a while now, you know that we are jealous of the Chinese people because they are getting all the EVs.
Now Nissan’s Dongfeng Motor Chinese joint-venture (DFL) is announcing a new “green vehicle plan” which includes 20 new ‘electrified’ vehicles.
As we previously discussed, there are some issues with Nissan employing the term “electrified.”
The Japanese automaker defines ‘electrified vehicles’ as “pure electric models or those with e-POWER powertrains.”
The latter currently represents the majority of Nissan’s ‘electrified vehicle’ sales. As we previously reported, the automaker’s e-POWER powertrain is entirely gas-powered since it is equipped with a hybrid powertrain that works with a gas generator charging a battery pack which feeds the electric motor. There’s no plug to independently charge the battery pack so the vehicles are entirely powered by gas.
DFL’s newly unveiled plan for 20 new ‘electrified’ involves both fully electric and e-POWER vehicles:
“DFL plans to introduce 20 electrified (EV + e-POWER) models under its four brands by 2022, with Nissan e-Power technology available on core models. By 2022, 30% of DFL sales will be EV and e-POWER products. The company plans to localize 100% of key e-components within three years as Nissan technologies, the QA system and APW production mode are introduced.”
The company plans to also lower emissions through the deployment of 3 solar “parks”.
Uchida Makoto, Nissan global senior vice president and DFL president, commented on the new announcement:
“Since its founding 15 years ago, DFL has delivered high-quality automotive products to our customers. We will continue to do so in this period of industry change, understanding that excellence in the Green area is a key factor to successfully navigate this change. Our green development will underpin operations throughout the value chain.”
The latest electric vehicle effort comes after Nissan announced its intentions to sell 1 million ‘electrified vehicles’ a year by 2022 under its own brand.
Nissan is amongst the established automakers most invested in electric vehicles between all its brands and alliances with companies like Renault, Mitsubishi, and all its Chinese joint-ventures.
