In the past, we have seen a few electric cars being discounted significantly on top of EV incentives, but there seems to be a new wave of them lately.
It appears to coincide with the next-generation of EVs coming to market which represents a more important step up than previous generations.
With more range and features for a lower price, electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, Chevy Bolt EV, and the next-gen Nissan Leaf are changing people’s expectations of electric cars.
But as we reported this weekend, the delays for those cars to reach most markets are opening the door for other EVs and some of them are now being heavily discounted.
We have recently seen new Leafs going for just ~$13,000 in Florida and Ohio after Nissan partnered with local electric utilities to offer deeper discounts on top of federal incentives.
Now similar deals are being offered in more markets. The most impressive deal is in San Diego for both the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3 with San Diego Gas & Electric which is offering, in partnership with the two automakers, up to $10,000 in discounts.
After the up to$7,500 federal tax credit and the $2,500 state rebate, it can add up to $20,000 in discounts. It can easily bring the price of the Leaf under $15,000 and the price of the i3 under $25,000.
Other similar discounts have also been reported in other locations, especially where inventories of 2017 models have piled up. You can reach out to a local dealer for Leaf inventories here and BMW i3 inventories here.
Sonoma Clean Power, a not-for-profit public electricity provider in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, is also leading heavy discounts on EVs. They are partnering with local dealers to arrive at some pretty impressive prices, like a new VW e-Golf for just $10,000 after the incentives.
If you don’t want to wait or pay for the new EVs like the Model 3 and Bolt EV, there are some good deals to find on the EV market today.
