Two new electric cars try to steal Tesla Model 3’s spotlight with unveilings today

If I tell you that an electric car is being unveiled this week, you’d quickly think of the production version of the Tesla Model 3 to be unveiled on Friday.

But two other new electric cars are being unveiled today: Bollinger Motors’ all-electric sport utility truck and Sono Motors’ all-electric and solar-powered car.

It’s hard to believe that it is purely a coincidence and that they are not trying to take advantage of all the attention around electric cars this week due to the Model 3’s release tomorrow, which would actually be a smart move, but we will give them the benefit of the doubt.

Nonetheless, they will now try to get some of the Model 3’s spotlight in this busy week for electric car enthusiasts. Here’s what to expect:

Sono Motors is an electric car startup based in Munich, Germany.

We reported on them when they launched a crowdfunding campaign for their city cars with a solar power aspect:

“There will initially be two versions of the car, the Urban and the Extender, both offered for a relatively inexpensive price. The Urban is projected to cost about €12,000 ($13,200) with a 14.4 kWh battery pack and a range of about 120 km (75 miles). On the higher end, the Extender is expected to list for €16,000 ($17,600) with a 30 kWh battery pack and 250 km (155 miles) of range. Both trim levels will come with a 50 kW motor, top speed of 140 km/h (87 mp/h), 6 seats, a 10-inch display and the systems that I mentioned above.”

They launched the campaign in September 2016 and they have now raised just over half a million euros. The company is expected to launch the car later today.

The second vehicle is Bollinger’s truck, which we have been pretty excited about since the startup has been teasing it over the last few months.

The all-electric truck has been designed with simplicity and utility in mind. As of now, it is definitely alone as an all-electric vehicle in the Jeep-like segment, but that could change by the time it hits production.

Bollinger plans to unveil the full truck tonight and we will keep a close eye on the specs and price, which will make or break the new EV.
