We have seen a lot of Tesla Model 3 release candidates through Tesla’s test drives on public roads, but the automaker is also testing the vehicle on its own test track in Fremont.
Today, we bring you some fun high-resolution footage of a red Model 3 being put through its paces during performance testing.
The automaker had a few vehicles on its test track in Fremont today and one of them was a new red Model 3 release candidate.
Engineers were driving the vehicle around the track and performing some tests, including flooring it from a standstill.
Tesla recently confirmed that the base version of the Model 3 will have a more than decent 5.6-second 0 to 60 mph acceleration, but CEO Elon Musk also confirmed that other versions with dual motor and a larger battery pack will be even quicker.
Of course, we don’t know which version was on the track today and we can’t tell how quick it is from the video, but it’s definitely fast. You can see it accelerating from a standstill on two occasions at around 0:30 and 1:15:
It’s a collection of clips and admittedly, some of them are shaky, but they were filmed from a distance with a strong zoom.
The Model 3 is still going through testing as it gets closer to production, which Tesla recently reiterated that it is still on track for a start in July and deliveries to follow shortly after.
While production appears imminent, all eyes are on the production ramp up, which is more difficult to predict. Based on Tesla’s own part orders, the company would need perfect production execution in order to deliver 80,000 Model 3s in 2017.
We should have a much better idea after the start of production and the following delivery event planned for July.
Here are a few stills from the Model 3 performance test from earlier today:
