Chrysler to reportedly unveil an all-electric vehicle based on the Pacifica at CES

After a rare step into electrification with a so far well-received plug-in hybrid version of the Pacifica minivan, Chrysler is reportedly ready to move to an all-electric version of the vehicle or at least an all-electric vehicle based on the same platform. The new vehicle is expected to be unveiled at CES in Las Vegas next month.

The report comes from Bloomberg based on anonymous sources:

The Italian-American carmaker will show the model at CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show and the world’s largest technology convention, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. FCA is also working on an electric Maserati sports car, which aims to compete with Tesla models, the people said. Fiat Chrysler declined to comment.

We already knew about the all-electric Maserati since several executives have already been talking about it. They will be adding an electric powertrain to the company’s stunning Alfieri concept car.

But based on Bloomberg’s report, it will be an electric Chrysler based on the Pacifica minivan that will be unveiled at CES, which is held in Las Vegas during the first week of January.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat/Chrysler, has been clear about only developing electric vehicles for incentives, claiming that he doesn’t understand how anyone can make money selling electric cars other than to comply with government mandates. He went as far as publicly asking customers not to buy FCA’s electric vehicles.

Unless something has changed, if the concept they unveil at CES is aimed at production, it likely will be mainly for ZEV markets.
