First look at Tesla Model X’s new 5-seat configuration with the best in class cargo space

After shipping a few thousand Model X SUVs with 6 and 7-seat configurations since launching the vehicle over a year ago, Tesla finally started producing the all-electric SUV with 5-seat configuration last month. Now that there’s an option that can have the second-row seats fold flat, the Model X has the best-in-class storage of any SUV with 88 cubic feet.

The first few Model Xs with the new configuration have been spotted off the assembly line at the Tesla Fremont Factory – giving us our best look at the new option so far.

The huge cargo space not only comes from the fact that the second-row seats fold flat with the new configuration, but also with the doubling in size of the hidden compartment that is normally just at the edge of the rear hatch.

It now extends over where the third-row seats would normally be. It can either be covered for the entire section to be flat or the covers can be removed to offer even more cargo space. At 88 cubic feet, the Model X’s top competition like the BMW X5 (66.0 ft³), Porsche Cayenne (62.9 ft³), Audi Q7 (71.6 ft³), or Volvo XC90 (85.7 ft³).

Someone spotted one of the new Model X in Fremont and posted a quick video to Youtube with a few shots of the new configuration:

With the new second-row seats, Tesla had to change the beautiful chrome seat stand that was described as a “piece of art” by CEO Elon Musk.

It was replaced by a less elegant (but not bad either when it comes to seat stands) black frame:

A commentator on the Model X owner Facebook group (closed group) explained the details of the rear cargo space:

  • 48″ length with 2nd row up
  • goes up to 74″ length with 2nd row folded
  • 54″ width at 2nd row with it folded
  • 44″ at the back
  • 38″ minimum width at the back over the rear axle
