During the height of the Roman Empire, the saying “all roads lead to Rome” was almost literally true since most roads radiated out from the capital city, Rome. Almost 2 millenniums later, things are different, but by activating its latest Supercharger in Magliano yesterday, Tesla’s European network of fast-charging stations now leads to Rome from almost anywhere in Europe.
The new 8-stall Supercharging station at Hotel la Pergola went online just yesterday and it now enables road trips to Rome from almost anywhere in Europe without having to spend a cent on fuel.
The new station is part of Tesla’s expansion plan for its two networks of charging stations. In order to be able to support its growing fleet of Model S, X and relatively soon Model 3, Tesla will double the number of Superchargers to 7,000 units and quadruple the number of Destination chargers to 15,000 units within the next 2 years.
Tesla’s Supercharger coverage in western and central Europe, as well as in Scandinavia have been quite good for the past few years, but recently the automaker has been expanding to other countries and regions.
The network is now in Spain, Poland, Croatia and Slovakia. Several more stations are also under construction or in the permitting process in the Czech Republic and further south and east in Spain – going toward Portugal. Soon enough, Tesla drivers will be able to travel in Europe east-west from Lisbon to Warsaw and north-south from the arctic circle to Rome with the Supercharger network.
Tesla currently operates 628 Supercharger stations with over 3,738 Superchargers in total. A supercharger can add up to 170 miles (275 km) of range during a half hour charge on a Model S or X, and the Model 3 will be compatible with the network. You can suggest a location for a Supercharger on Tesla’s website. My own suggestion: Quebec City – make it happen Tesla!
The automaker also adds stations where the population of Tesla owners is increasing. While Tesla’s sales in Italy have been modest so far, deliveries are growing steadily and Superchargers in the country are also useful for Tesla owners from elsewhere in Europe. Based on registration data, Tesla delivered 117 Model S vehicles in Italy in 2015 and 69 vehicles in the first 4 months of 2016 alone.
