Tesla Model X owners already claiming world records for fastest 1/8 and 1/4 mile of any SUV [Videos]

As Tesla is ramping up production of the Model X, more early reservation holders are taking delivery of their all-electric SUV and a few of them are already taking it to the tracks.

Drag racing a SUV seems like an absurd idea at first, but a Model X P90D with the “Ludicrous Speed Upgrade” can accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, making it very competitive with a wide range of sport cars.

Some owners are already claiming world records for fastest 1/8 (7.38 seconds) and 1/4 (11.61 seconds) mile of any SUV.

For comparison, one of the fastest production SUV ever built, the BMW X5 M, can race 1/8 mile in about 7.9 seconds and the 1/4 mile in about 12.3 seconds.

A few other examples:

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT – 1/8: 8.7 s – 1/4: 13.2 s
  • Porsche Cayenne Turbo S – 1/8: 8.3 s – 1/4: 12.6 s

Model X owner Max Kennedy achieved the 7.38 seconds 1/8 mile and he describes his experience at the track in a Reddit post:

When I first pulled in, the track staff snickered and asked if I really wanted to race with “that”. By the end of the night, that same staff was announcing over the PA system the undefeated night for the Tesla SUV. Each time I lined up to wait my turn to race, the crowd around the car got bigger and bigger with some true respect given at the end of the night. They loved the performance and were blown away with all the tech and features.

Here you can watch his night at the track:

As for the 1/4 mile world record, it was claimed by Drag Times earlier this month. Here’s the video:
