Almost half of GM’s propulsion division is now working on electric and alternative drivetrains

While announcing the renaming of its GM Powertrain to GM Global Propulsion Systems this week, the automaker gave us a glimpse at the structure of the division and disclosed that almost half of its engineers are now working on electric and alternative propulsion systems.

In a press release, GM says that the new naming scheme is to formally reflect “the industry trends and its evolution over the years”. The company highlights the fact that it is expanding capabilities, and especially mentions the all-electric drivetrain of Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Voltec propulsion system in the Chevrolet Volt .

Though it would be fair to mention that the GM developed the Bolt and its drivetrain through a partnership with LG, which will manufacture a surprising number of critical parts of the Bolt.

GM also confirmed that more than 8,600 people now work at the propulsion division.
