VW says the next e-Golf will see a 30% increase in range to about 108 miles

VW head of electronic development Volkmar Tanneberger was at CES last week and revealed that the next generation all-electric e-Golf will see a roughly 30% increase in range, which should bring it to about 108 miles on a single charge.

While talking with Autoblog during a roundtable discussion at CES 2016, Tanneberger said that the new cells will be 37 amp hours instead of the current 28 amp hours found in the 2016 VW e-Golf.

He added that the battery pack will remain unchanged:

“It’s the same package but just with the next generation of cells.”

Unfortunately, the company’s head of electronic development didn’t reveal when VW plans on introducing these new cells, but the clock is ticking if the German automaker wants to compete with Nissan, which recently introduced a LEAF with a 30 kWh battery pack for 107 miles of range, and BMW, which confirmed working for a new battery pack of similar capacity for its i3 to be released later in the year.

The current e-Golf has an EPA-rated range of 83 miles.
