Hyundai to unveil a new car with 3 electric powertrain options in January 2016

Hyundai announced today that it will unveil a new car with 3 electric powertrain options called IONIQ. The vehicle will be available in all-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and conventional hybrid without a plug (HEV).

The launch is set for January 2016 in Korea, followed by Geneva and New York auto shows. The company revealed very little information about the vehicle, but it released the teaser image featured above. In a press release, the company explained the origin of the name:

The new car’s name references elements of its creation. An ion is an electrically-charged atom, linking to the car’s clever combination of electrified powertrains. The second part of the name references the unique offering it brings to the Hyundai range, demonstrating the brand’s environmental commitment and willingness to maximize choice for its customers. Finally, the Q is depicted in the car’s logo as a visual breakthrough, acknowledging the fresh new approach of this advanced, low-emission model.

Here’s the new logo:

The company says that the IONIQ is powered by a “high-capacity, ultra-efficient lithium-ion battery”. They didn’t reveal when they plan on bringing the car to production, but we should know more at the launch of the concept in January.
