Electric skateboards have been around long enough that we are beginning to see brands come out with multiple models. With more and more commuters looking for alternative ways to travel in crowded cities, it’s no surprise that this trend is continuing to grow. Just this week, Boosted announced the second generation of its popular electric skateboard.

This time around brings an increased focus on efficiency and longer travel capabilities. So how does the new model stack up? More below.

The latest Boosted Board (familiar design, new tech) features a removable battery than can be interchanged if you run out of juice on the way to work. Range is limited to six to seven miles with the standard 99Wh battery while the larger (and new) extended 199Wh can push up to 14 miles. The larger power supply weighs in at just .75 pounds, which is impressive. We’ll talk pricing later, but you can upgrade to the extended battery up front for an extra $100. Buying a spare will cost you $299 or $399, respectively.

After a fairly successful first run, Boosted placed its sights on improved quality assurance this time around. This includes a new water-resistant design that keeps fragile electronics and motors sealed away from any liquids. The internal radio system, powered by Bluetooth, also received a boost. Finally, the deck and drivetrain were tweaked for a “smoother ride.” You can thank larger 80mm wheels for that.

Largely, much of the Boosted Board remains the same. Riders will still control speed and braking with the included wireless remote. There are a few different paint schemes available but most of the improvements are largely behind-the-scenes. Interested? You can reserve a second generation boosted board today with a $100 deposit. The base model will run you $1,000 with upgrades bringing the cost up to the $1,600 range. As of now, Boosted is prepping to ship the new boards in July.
