Ford Fathom production faces delays
After Ford said just last month it was on track to begin Fathom production in the first quarter of 2027, that timeline is now facing uncertainty.
Speaking at the 2026 Automotive News Congress this week, Ford CEO Jim Farley explained how its Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform could be the automaker’s answer to Chinese brands like BYD, which are rapidly gaining market share in Europe and other key global markets.
Farley said the company realized at one point that a BYD EV would have roughly a 20% cost advantage over Fathom’s battery.
To stay competitive, the team modified the motors, gearboxes, and inverters, enabling smaller batteries than BYD’s.
While it sounds promising, Farley admitted that “It’s going to be a heck of an effort to launch this at scale, at cost, on time.”
Farley added that “We haven’t landed the plane on mass production of UEV yet.” Ford previously said the first Fathom prototypes are scheduled to roll off the assembly line at its 3-million-square-foot Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) in the first quarter of 2027.
Ford is investing $5 billion between its Louisville Assembly Plant and BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan to prepare for UEV production.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal report citing sources familiar with the matter, Ford aims to sell 100,000 Fathoms in its first year. With UEV production hurdles persisting, that might be hard to hit.
When it goes on sale, still expected in early 2027 until Ford confirms otherwise, the Fathom will start at $28,350 for the standard range battery model.
Farley previously said the Fathom will offer more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4. It will also be the first to have Apple Maps integrated directly into the navigation system, a “large touchscreen display,” wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BlueCruise, bidirectional charging capabilities, and a digital key.
We also know the electric pickup will have a NACS port after a few prototypes were spotted charging at a Tesla Supercharger this summer.
