If the Mopar faithful won’t embrace the 670 hp electric Charger because it’s powered by batteries, and won’t accept the 550 hp Sixpack Charger because it’s powered by turbos. In a last-ditch effort, Dodge executives are hoping the people chasing them down will.
A new Dodge Law Charger PPV concept was on display at the Police Fleet Expo at the Daytona International Speedway this week – and, while there’s been no official announcement from Stellantis about the concept or its future, it’s probably safe to say you should get familiar with the Charger’s roofline if you have a heavy foot.
“It’s absolutely part of the plan,” Dodge CEO Matt McAlear told Mopar Insiders, just days before the reveal. “I met with the GSA (General Services Administration) and our fleet team a couple of weeks ago. So, they’re actively working with the California Highway Patrol and the Michigan State Police, two of the main bodies that help set the standards for what a pursuit model must be. So, we’re absolutely focused on it. It’s always taken a Charger to catch a Charger, and it’s not something we’re walking away from.”
Details were light on the Team One Network social media post that effectively served as the car’s announcement, but we do know something: AWD is standard.
It looks the part, sure – but the left lane bandits are sure to be breathing a sigh of relief to see the gas-powered Charger being taken on by the police department planners. With the ongoing conflict in the middle east continuing to ratchet up municipal fuel bills the gas alone is sure to put the squeeze on department resources, while the twin-turbo V6 packing just 550 hp won’t exactly strike fear into hearts of speeding soccer moms behind the wheels of a Model Y – and are likely to get laughed out of even a moderately interesting Cars and Coffee.
As a law-abiding citizen myself who has no idea where to buy Q16 or what VR38DETT might even begin to stand for, I hope America’s police force wises up, plugs in, and gets serious about hunting down the scofflaws with the increased hp, mountains of off-the-line torque, and sensible fuel savings of the electric model. If they did, it would probably be better for troopers’ health and certainly be better for the well-being of the people they get to protect and serve.
Or, you know, if you are a scofflaw who wants to run from the police Chargers, you could do far worse than the sneaky, silent, and stealthy EV that packs an extra 100+ hp.
