Tesla Model Y: Should Tesla’s compact SUV feature Falcon Wing doors? [Poll]

When Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the Model Y, the automaker’s upcoming compact SUV, will feature Falcon Wing doors, like the Model X, it divided Tesla enthusiasts. Some were already in love with the feature on the Model X, but others had serious reservations.

That was in October 2015, months before the Model X hit the market in any significant numbers. I expected those reservations to mostly go away after the Model X started going out to customers, but it looks like that wasn’t the case.

I was reading the comments on our last article on the Model Y and I was quite surprised by the number of comments pleading for Tesla to drop the Falcon Wings for the Model Y.

I am now curious to get a quick poll going to see how those comments are representative of Electrek readers’ general opinion on the doors making it to the Model Y.

The main concerns appear to be the fact that it is more expensive and complex to manufacture. From a consumer standpoint, I wouldn’t think that it should be too big of a concern since Tesla is obviously ironing out the manufacturing process for the doors through the Model X program.

The doors are practical in the Model X because of the easy access to the third row and the ability to stand over the second row, but that could be less true about the Model Y since it’s not likely to even have a thrid row.

There were some problems with opening the doors to 100% in some garages, while it fits in most, there are always exceptions which wouldn’t occur with normal doors. There’s also the potential problem with reliability. It’s still a fairly new product so we don’t know yet how well it will hold up after thousands of uses.

Musk confirmed the Falcon Wing doors on the Model Y almost a year ago, but it’s not impossible that things might have changed, especially after the difficult production ramp up over the past year.
