Volvo’s new midsize electric SUV is here, but it may be hard to get your hands on one

Volvo is already calling the EX60 a “game changer” as its highest-range, fastest-charging EV to date. After delaying US deliveries, Volvo’s new midsize electric SUV will remain limited, at least for now.

Volvo delays EX60 deliveries in the US

Volvo’s new midsize electric SUV is impressive. As the first model built on its new SPA3 platform, the EX60 can drive further and charge faster than any all-electric Volvo so far.

After delivering the first models in Europe this summer, Volvo said it planned to ramp up production as it rolled out to new markets, including the US.

Volvo expected to sell roughly 7,000 EX60s in the US by the end of 2026, a dealer told Automotive News, but the company is on pace to deliver just a fraction of that.

The Swedish luxury brand told dealers in a memo sent in late September that it had delayed customer deliveries, which Automotive News reviewed.

“Introducing a brand-new platform and product into a running factory is always a challenge,” Volvo’s memo said, adding that “The delays are not related to vehicle quality, safety, or product performance.”

Citing a person with knowledge of the situation, the report claims Volvo is working through a “production crisis” that will leave the US with limited inventory until early 2027.

Volvo spokesperson Jacquelyn Johnson confirmed that EX60 availability will “remain limited” in the short term. However, Johnson added that Volvo expects to distribute “a significant number” of EX60s to dealers in early 2027.

The source said Volvo will focus on deliveries in Europe, where EV sales are stronger, leaving the US on the back burner.

Since Volvo is using new manufacturing methods, such as megacasting, cell-to-body, and more, “the ramp-up phase takes a little longer than initially planned,” Johnson said.

The issue reportedly stems from integrating the EX60’s battery pack into the body structure and manufacturing the electric motors.

Volvo began EX60 production in April at its upgraded Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden. Initial plans called for building around 2,000 EX60s a week, but the source said output will be about 10% of that.

The 2027 Volvo EX60 starts at $58,400 and offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 307 miles. With up to 320 kW, it can add up to 155 miles in just 10 minutes of charging.

Starting at $60,750, the EX60 P10 Plus offers up to 330 miles of range. It can add up to 165 miles in 10 minutes with up to 370 kW.

Volvo previously said a range-topping EX60 P12 AWD will go on sale later this year, offering an estimated range of up to 400 miles.

Measuring 189.1″ long, 81.4 wide, and 64.4 tall, with a wheelbase of 116.9″, the EX60 is about the size of a BMW’s new iX3 and the Tesla Model Y.

Electrek’s Take

Volvo’s production crisis will open the door for luxury rivals like BMW and Mercedes-Benz to gain a first-mover advantage with their next-generation electric vehicles already rolling out.

The Swedish automaker has a pattern of production and software snags that has hampered other EV launches, including its flagship EX90 SUV.

As likely its most important electric vehicle to date, Volvo aims to get it right the first time with the EX60.

Meanwhile, Volvo’s global sales dropped 10% to 141,609 units in the third quarter. In the US, its sales fell 8.7% to 23,766 units.
