The ID. California Cruise, Volkswagen’s first fully electric California camper, looks ready for your next adventure.
Meet the Volkswagen ID. California EV camper
After Volkswagen unveiled the ID. California Cruise at Caravan Salon 2026 on Friday, we are already getting our first look at it in person.
The ID. California Cruise is the first of a family of new all-electric California camper vans that Volkswagen will launch over the next few years.
Based on the ID. Buzz, VW’s EV camper is equipped with everything needed for a weekend getaway, camping, or a longer road trip.
Inside, the ID. California Cruise offers enough sleeping space for two with a fold-out bed that’s 2.03 meters (6.66 ft) long and 1.20 meters (3.93 ft) wide. It also includes blackout shades throughout the cabin and ventilation grilles on the front-side windows.
German car reviewer Autogefühl got a closer look at what the interior looks like in person. In the video, you can see how easy the bed folds out and the added flexible storage underneath it.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, in collaboration with Stuff Bubble, known for the world’s first inflatable camping kitchen, developed equipment that turns an everyday van into a “fully-fledged camper in just a few minutes.” All parts can easily be stored in the vehicle.
To sweeten the deal, Volkswagen is tossing in a pair of camping chairs and a table with the new electric camper.
Based on the ID. Buzz, the ID. California Cruise will be available in short- or long-wheelbase variants. It includes added standard equipment, including the Interior Style Package, Comfort Package, and a PowerSocket discharge adapter to enable vehicle-to-load (V2L).
With up to 3.6 kW of power, the camper van can be used as a mobile power bank to power a coffee pot, laptop, camping equipment, or even charge an e-bike or e-scooter.
Other added features include a new California mode for overnight stays and “electric-trip” functions in the California app to find and navigate to charging stations along their route.
The ID. California Cruise starts at €60,761 in Germany, or about $70,500, with the first customer deliveries set to begin in early 2027.
Volkswagen will reveal full details later this year, but given it’s based on the ID. Buzz Pro, we have a good idea of what to expect.
Powered by a 79 kWh battery, the ID. Buzz SWB has a WLTP range of up to 461 km (286 miles). The LWB version uses an 86 kWh battery that delivers up to 487 km (302 miles) of range on a single charge.
Those in the US will likely miss out on the electric California camper, but Volkswagen added a similar Tourer model for the 2027 ID. Buzz lineup.
