Volvo is expected to reenter the segment with an all-new sedan, but it may not be as electric as expected.
Is Volvo launching an electric sedan?
After pulling the S90 and V60 Cross Country, Volvo will no longer offer sedans or wagons in the US, leaving its lineup consisting of just SUVs and crossovers.
The Swedish automaker is revamping its lineup as it navigates the Trump Administration’s policy changes.
Importing vehicles from Europe has become too costly, and Volvo has struggled to sell electric vehicles following the elimination of the federal EV tax credit last September.
For that reason, Volvo is discontinuing the EX30 in the US after the 2026 model year, its smallest electric SUV.
The Single Motor EX30 variant was expected to go on sale as one of the most affordable EVs in the US, starting at around $ 35,000, but Volvo dropped the electric SUV from its lineup altogether, citing “market conditions and financial factors.”
According to Automotive News, Volvo is eyeing a return to the small-car market with a midsize electric sedan and wagon.
Volvo would build the two new vehicles in Europe, while both would be underpinned by its new SPA3 platform.
While the new EVs are expected to arrive in the second half of 2028, another new Volvo sedan was captured for the first time.
The images posted on NewCarScoops show the vehicle heavily camouflaged. Despite the disguise, you can see it’s equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR, but it still has exhaust pipes underneath, suggesting it will use a gas engine.
Keep in mind this is still an early-stage test vehicle, and the actual production model could change.
Volvo is also expected to launch a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and traditional hybrid options, including updated versions of the XC40, XC60, and XC90, so a refreshed S70 hybrid could be in the works.
While Volvo is introducing new hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, it isn’t abandoning pure electric vehicles altogether.
The 2027 EX60 is now on sale, starting at $58,400. As the first vehicle based on its SPA3 platform, the electric SUV is Volvo’s longest-range, fast-charging, and most technologically advanced EV to date.
Volvo said the range-topping EX60 P12 AWD will go on sale later this year, offering an estimated range of up to 400 miles. The P10 grade, currently on sale, offers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 330 miles. It can also add up to 165 miles in 10 minutes of charging.
On Volvo’s website, the 2027 EX60 P10 Plus is listed for lease at $649 per month (36 months), with $6,309 due at signing.
The aging EX40 is expected to be replaced by the EX50, a bigger and more affordable electric SUV as Volvo’s new entry-level EV.
