Forget what you read on Facebook: 94% of EV drivers won’t go back to gas

On today’s episode of Quick Charge, the audio is sketchy but the math is absolutely rock solid with 94% of current EV owners saying they’ll NEVER go back to driving an antiquated gas guzzler. CDK’s David Thomas walks us through the findings.

From dealership interactions to daily driving habits, CDK’s research taps real EV drivers to uncover how behavior, expectations, and satisfaction vary across different ownership scenarios. With access to thousands of auto deals and an in-depth view of what drives today’s EV buyers, this study can help all EV stakeholders get more insight into what EV buyers value most, and how the auto industry must improve to meet their needs.

I built a passive solar home ten years ago with 6.5 kwh of PV and an off-grid Aquion battery bank. Five years ago I tied into the grid and discovered that I could produce a lot more power than I consume. Then I upgraded to LFP batteries, and two years ago I traded the Prius for a Bolt. Even with the Bolt plugged in, I am still net-positive. I will never go back to gas! Recently my neighbor stopped by to ask about EV charging as they are looking at buying a PHEV. Then I turned them loose in my Bolt, and now they are looking at buying an EV instead. I also have a 1960 Volkswagen (owned it for 43 years) that I am looking at doing an EV conversion on after I retire in a couple of years.

I’ve been involved in the electric vehicle transition in one way or another since 1997, and have covered the industry as a journalist since 2008. You can catch more of my work on Quick Charge and The Heavy Equipment Podcast with Mike Switzer.
