BYD’s flagship electric SUV is so smooth that it won an anti-motion-sickness certification

The Great Tang is BYD’s largest SUV yet, measuring over 17 feet (5,236 mm) long. As BYD’s first D-segment flagship SUV, it offers all the premium extras you’d expect, like massive digital screens, a dual-chamber air suspension, and even a built-in refrigerator.

After opening preorders for the Great Tang at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, the flagship electric SUV received over 150,000 reservations, the highest for a single BYD vehicle ever.

The Great Tang is impressive, boasting “29 world firsts,” BYD said, including a CLTC driving range of up to 950 km (590 miles), Flash Charging in as little as 5 minutes, and China’s first 2+2+2 seating layout.

It’s also equipped with what BYD calls the “industry-first multi-dimensional anti-motion sickness mode,” which automatically adjusts vehicle settings to reduce passenger nausea.

The new feature works in combination with BYD’s DiSus intelligent body control system to deliver smooth acceleration, a softened suspension, and easy turning.

Lu Tian, general manager of BYD’s Dynasty series, announced that the Great Tang received the authoritative comfort and anti-motion-sickness certification from the China Automotive Technology and Research Center over the weekend for its smooth drive.

The Great Tang is on sale in China, starting at about $35,500 (239,900 yuan). The base Premium model is powered by a 105.79 kWh BYD Blade 2.0 battery, providing a CLTC range of 800 km (497 miles).

With a larger 130.15 kWh BYD Blade 2.0 battery, the Flagship version offers a CLTC driving range of up to 950 km (590 miles). It’s available with dual- and single-motor powertrains.

Based on a 1,000V architecture with BYD’s Flash Charging technology, the large electric SUV can still recharge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes.

Inside, the flagship electric SUV features BYD’s latest cabin design, tech, and software. The infotainment setup includes three large screens, one for the driver, one at the center, and another for the passenger.

For rear passengers, there’s a massive entertainment screen that drops from the roof, allowing them to watch movies, play games, or work.

The flagship electric SUV can transform into an office on wheels (or luxury oasis) with zero-gravity, captain-style seats in the front and second rows. All with heating, ventilation, and massage.

Measuring 5,263 mm (17.2 ft) in length, 1,999 mm (6.5 ft) in width, and 1,800 mm (5.9 ft) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm (10.3 ft), the Great Tang is even bigger than the Hyundai IONIQ 9.

After launching in China, BYD is expected to introduce the flagship Great Tang SUV in Europe by the end of the year as part of its overseas push.
