BYD’s pickup spotted in China with a different look

BYD’s plug-in hybrid pickup is already a hit in several overseas markets, but a new prototype was spotted driving in China with a slightly different design.

BYD brings its PHEV pickup to China

While the Shark, or Shark 6 as it’s sometimes called, is available in Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and will soon go on sale in Europe and the UK, BYD does not sell the pickup in its home market.

After launching the new Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 and Bao 8 with its new Flash Charging system in May, company officials confirmed the Shark would go on sale in China by the end of 2026.

A prototype with minimal disguise was recently caught testing in China, giving us a better look at the domestic pickup.

The new image (shown below) from ThinkerCar shows that the BYD badge will be replaced by the Fang Cheng Bao branding. Company officials said the pickup would be sold under the Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand and distributed through its sales network.

Outside of that, BYD’s pickup shares a rugged design with the global version. The BYD Shark is 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide, and 1,925 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm, or about the size of the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

Powered by BYD’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) Super Hybrid system, the Shark is equipped with a 1.5T 4-cylinder engine and dual electric motors for standard AWD.

The front motor provides up to 228 hp (170 kW), while the rear delivers 201 hp (150 kW), for a combined maximum output of 429 hp (320 kW).

It’s also equipped with a 29.58 kWh battery that provides an NEDC pure-electric driving range of about 62 miles (100 km).

According to Autohome, BYD is expected to launch the domestic version of its pickup in China by the end of the third quarter, or early fourth quarter of 2026. Prices will likely start in the 200,000-300,000 yuan range ($29,500-$44,000).
