BYD upgrades one of its top selling EVs with 5-min flash charging and 390 miles range

BYD launched its new Flash Charging system, enabling EV charging in as little as 5 minutes, in luxury vehicles like the Denza Z9 GT. Now, it’s set to roll out to some of its best sellers.

BYD’s 5-minute charging rolls out to volume EVs

After introducing its new Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging system last month, BYD confirmed the Yangwang U7, an ultra-luxury electric sedan, would be the first vehicle equipped with the new tech.

BYD has since launched several new models with the new battery and charging tech, including the new Denza Z9 GT, which will be the first vehicle sold overseas to feature its Flash Charging system.

After opening orders for the Denza Z9 GT in Europe last week, starting at €115,000 ($134,500), BYD’s executive vice president Stella Li said the luxury electric shooting brake is “the perfect choice to introduce the principle of ‘Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3’ to the world, as we start our global rollout of FLASH Charging in Europe.”

With a capacity of up to 1,500 kW, BYD’s Flash Chargers enable vehicles equipped with its new battery to recharge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes.

Going from 10% to 97%, which most consider a full charge, takes only 9 minutes, and even at -30°C, it takes only 3 minutes longer, replenishing the battery from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes.

Now, BYD is introducing new battery and flash-charging tech in some of its top-selling EVs. The Yuan Plus, sold as the Atto 3 outside of China, has now been upgraded to the new battery system.

BYD unveiled the third-generation Yuan Plus at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, featuring its new flash charging technology.

The electric crossover SUV will be available with two new battery packs: 57.545 kWh or 68.547 kWh, rated with CLTC driving ranges of 540 km (335 miles) and 630 km (391 miles), respectively.

So now the $30k (in overseas markets) Atto 3 has 5 minute megawatt charging. Tell me again, Jim Farley and RJ Scaringe, why 400V 150kw average charging is "good enough"? The mantra of US auto - we will give you less for less and take twice as long to bring it to market - is not a recipe for global competitiveness.

The new Yuan Plus is equipped with BYD’s new Blade Batteries and Flash Charging capabilities. It’s also bigger than the outgoing version, measuring 4,665 mm in length, 1,895 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,770 mm. That’s still slightly smaller than the Tesla Model Y.

BYD also upgraded the rear-mounted electric motor, which will be available in 268 hp (200 kW) or 322 hp (240 kW) configurations.

According to data compiled by Cleantechnica, the BYD Yuan Plus (Atto 3) was the 13th-best-selling EV globally in 2025, with 223,906 units sold.

While the electric SUV is one of BYD’s best-selling EVs, sales have slowed in China recently with a wave of new low-cost domestic rivals. BYD is betting on faster charging, a longer driving range, and advanced safety and convenience features to win back buyers.
