In a bid to ramp up its heavy-duty fleet in a hurry, Amazon has tapped zero-emissions logistics firm Einride to deploy 75 fully electric semi trucks across five US locations.
Amazon is already a leader in last-mile fleet electrification, but they’re struggling with unpredictable fuel costs along with everyone else in the middle-mile space – and that makes it hard to run a business. By tasking Einride to support the company’s middle-mile freight network to cover an estimated 3 million transport miles annually, the online shopping giant will be able to further insulate itself from big swings in fuel prices while simultaneously slashing its harmful carbon emissions and reducing air pollution.
“Working with Amazon is yet another powerful validation of Einride’s technology and strategic vision,” said Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, in a statement. “By deploying our intelligent platform within one of the world’s most sophisticated logistics networks, we are accelerating growth, while continuing to build industry-leading operational expertise.”
The rollout will utilize both the Amazon Relay middle-mile planning solution and Einride’s own proprietary optimization software, Saga AI, to manage electric vehicle execution of select Amazon loads and fleet charging. The company says the deployment will, “demonstrate what’s possible when innovation meets a shared vision for a lower-carbon future for transportation.”
Amazon joins a growing list of high-profile Einride customers that includes PepsiCo, Heineken, and GE – and is sure to improve the company’s prospects as it prepares to go public through a SPAC offering following a recent $113 million private funding round.
