Volkswagen may bring back another familiar name for a new luxury electric SUV

Volkswagen is retiring the Touareg after a 23-year run, but the company is now looking into bringing it back as a purely electric luxury SUV.

Is Volkswagen launching the ID Touareg EV SUV?

The Touareg arrived in 2002, marking Volkswagen’s entry into the premium SUV segment. Over 23 years and three generations on the market, Volkswagen sold over 1.2 million Touaregs across 39 countries.

Despite its success, Volkswagen is killing off the current gas-powered model with production set to end later this year.

The Touareg was discontinued from Volkswagen’s US lineup after the 2017 model year, but a special “Final Edition” model was available for order in other markets, such as Europe, until the end of March 2026.

According to Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s sales boss, this might not be the last time we see the luxury SUV. Sander told Autocar that the “Touareg is not huge business, but it’s got its place and this is why we are looking into opportunities for a next generation.”

Volkswagen’s sales boss confirmed the next-gen Touareg would be an EV and would remain a larger SUV. The luxury electric SUV would likely be called the ID Touareg as Volkswagen moves away from numerical naming.

While the ID Touareg EV would fill the gap left by the current gas model, it could still be a few years before it hits the market. It would likely launch after the Volkswagen ID Golf, which is scheduled for around 2028.

In the meantime, Volkswagen is launching a series of smaller, lower-priced EVs, starting with the ID Polo later this year.

Volkswagen will also introduce two new electric SUVs by the end of 2026, the ID Cross, an EV counterpart to the T-Cross, and the ID Tiguan, set to replace the ID 4.

Will the ID Touareg be available in the US? If Volkswagen decides to launch it, it would likely still be a long shot. The gas model was discontinued after the 2017 model year to make room for the larger Atlas and updated Tiguan.
