Lyten, a lithium-sulfur battery maker based in San Jose, California, has officially completed its acquisition of Northvolt Ett and Ett Expansion in Skellefteå, Sweden, as well as Northvolt Labs in Västerås.
The deal gives Lyten 16 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of existing battery manufacturing capacity, more than 160 hectares (395 acres) of land, and the buildings and infrastructure to expand further. It also includes what Lyten says is the largest and most advanced battery research and development center in Europe.
A new industrial hub in northern Sweden
Lyten is forming what it calls the “Lyten Industrial Hub” at the Northvolt Ett site in Skellefteå. The idea is to use Northvolt’s existing infrastructure, along with the region’s abundant clean hydropower, to co-locate battery manufacturing, AI data centers, and other strategically important industrial operations in Sweden and the European Union.
Lyten plans to use its own batteries and energy storage systems as part of the hub’s infrastructure.
As part of that plan, EdgeConneX, a global data center developer owned by EQT, plans to acquire a data center site from Lyten in Skellefteå. The site could scale to a 1-gigawatt data center campus, making it one of the largest data center facilities in Europe.
Restarting production in Sweden
Lyten says it will immediately begin restarting operations at Northvolt Ett and Northvolt Labs.
In Skellefteå, Ett will produce lithium-ion NMC battery cells for a broader range of customers, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), automotive, and other mobility markets. Lyten expects commercial cell sales from Ett to begin supplying Northvolt Dwa, its BESS manufacturing facility in Poland, in the second half of 2026.
Northvolt Labs in Västerås will continue developing long-life lithium-ion NMC cells. It will also work with Lyten’s Silicon Valley team to industrialize Lyten’s lithium-sulfur battery technology for gigascale manufacturing.
Lyten CEO and co-founder Dan Cook said the acquisition gives the company one of the largest battery manufacturing campuses in Europe, along with the largest battery R&D center on the continent. He said Lyten now has the infrastructure, talent, and technology to build a battery ecosystem across North America and Europe, supported by local supply chains and local workers.
Hiring ramp-up
Lyten says it has been working closely with local unions and will launch a rehiring program in both Skellefteå and Västerås.
Based on expected customer demand, the company plans to hire more than 600 additional employees over the next 12 months, with continued rapid hiring for the next couple of years.
Matthias Arleth, CEO of Lyten Sweden, said, “As the transaction has now closed, we are excited to restart production and initiate the ramp-up in Sweden one production line at a time.”
A $5 billion Northvolt asset deal
This Sweden acquisition is part of a larger deal. In October, Lyten closed on Northvolt’s BESS manufacturing facility in Gdansk, Poland, and it’s also progressing the acquisition of Northvolt’s assets in Heide, Germany.
Altogether, the Northvolt manufacturing assets included in the broader acquisition have a book value of $5 billion.
Lyten says it is funding the Northvolt acquisitions through equity investments from existing and new North American and European investors, as well as capital tied to EdgeConneX’s planned data center investment in Skellefteå.
Lyten chairman and cofounder Lars Herlitz said, “Batteries are now a critical part of securing energy independence and supporting the competitiveness of European industries ranging from automotive to aerospace to data centers to grid resiliency.”
