Genesis is launching a new EV platform in 2027 that will offer a unique luxury experience

Genesis is growing faster than practically any luxury marque in history. With plans to introduce a unique new EV platform next year, Genesis aims to solidify its status in the premium segment.

Genesis prepares for a new EV platform in 2027

After celebrating its tenth anniversary last year, Genesis promised that the next ten years would be even bigger as it expands beyond being just another luxury brand.

The GV60, Genesis’s first dedicated electric vehicle, is based on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, the same one that underpins the IONIQ series and Kia’s EV lineup. Meanwhile, its other models are mostly based on the Hyundai M3 platform.

With ambitious plans to solidify its position as a leading luxury brand, Genesis is preparing to launch its own dedicated platform in 2027 to underpin its upcoming EV and hybrid vehicles.

Although details are still pretty slim at this point, the luxury brand’s European head, Peter Kronschnabl, told AutoCar that it finally showcase its unique premium dynamics, separate from Hyundai and Kia.

“Genesis is a brand of the Hyundai Motor Group, and within that has certain specifics as a brand,” he said, adding, “And therefore, it was decided that in order to fulfil the requirements of the brand’s driving dynamics, Genesis needs its own platform for the future models.”

Vehicles based on the platform will offer the driving experience and luxury qualities that “drivers in the premium segment are looking for,” Kronschnabl explained.

Although Hyundai’s luxury brand initially planned to go all-electric by 2030, it now plans to introduce new hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), starting next year.

The new platform will offer a distinct feel from previous Genesis models. However, Kronschnabl indicated there will likely be some overlap with Hyundai and Kia vehicles as it continues to “leverage” its position within the Hyundai Motor Group.

Hyundai’s European CEO Xavier Martinet explained how the Group’s vertical integration provides key competitive advantages that “enable us to make some – I’m not saying bets but – decisions that might seem bold, but are actually extremely reasonable.”

Genesis has yet to say which models will be based on the new platform, but its latest concepts, such as the Gran Equator X off-roader and full-size Neolun SUVs, are likely candidates.

After launching its first high-performance “Magma” model, the GV60 Magma last month, Genesis plans to introduce several new vehicles, including the G70, G80, GV80, and G90, and possibly a production version of the Magma GT concept.

Later this year, Genesis is expected to launch its first hybrid, followed by an extended-range electric vehicle in 2027.

The production version of the Neolun concept is expected to debut later this year as the GV90, the Genesis brand’s largest and most luxurious SUV.

In 2027, Genesis plans to introduce a luxury off-road SUV based on the X Gran Equator Concept. Will it be the first model based on the new platform? We will learn more as details emerge.

Electrek’s Take

In the US, Genesis outsold Nissan’s Infiniti for the first time and is closing in on other leading luxury brands, including Lincoln and Acura.

Although Genesis hasn’t seen the same growth in Europe, the luxury brand aims to expand sales in the region by 650% over the next five years.

After launching its first vehicle in 2015, Genesis has sold nearly 1.5 million vehicles globally, a figure Hyundai Motor CEO José Muñoz claims is “faster than any luxury marque in history.” Muñoz took a jab at other luxury brands, boasting, “This is remarkable: some people are talking about Tesla and some about Lexus, or other companies. And we said to ourselves: ‘Hey, how long did it take them to reach one million sales?”

Over the next 10 years, Genesis plans to establish itself as a distinct luxury brand that’s unique from other Hyundai Motor vehicles.

It already has the premium looks, refined interior, and modern in-vehicle tech. A dedicated platform will help differentiate it not only from Hyundai and Kia but also from luxury rivals.
