bp pulse drops a 40‑bay DC fast‑charging hub at Chicago O’Hare

Airports are quickly turning into some of the busiest places to charge an EV, and bp pulse is leaning into that trend by officially opening a new DC fast‑charging hub today near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Similar bp pulse hubs are already operating near airports in Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Fort Lauderdale, and Houston.

At O’Hare, bp pulse has installed 40 DC fast-charging bays with a mix of 400kW and 150kW chargers. The site, which is three miles from the airport and one of the largest in Illinois, supports both CCS and NACS connectors. There’s also a covered canopy and free wifi, and the chargers sit next to a bp gas station with a convenience store, coffee shop, and restaurants.

“Opening our sixth major airport hub is a significant milestone in our commitment to expanding our EV charging network across the US,” said Sujay Sharma, CEO of bp pulse Americas. “By strategically placing our hubs in high‑demand locations like airports, we’re making it easier for drivers to access the fast and reliable charging they need. Locating this hub next to a bp retail site also means EV drivers can benefit from the convenient amenities already offered to customers today.”

Public funding helped make the project pencil out. The O’Hare charging hub received a $500,000 rebate from ComEd through its Make Ready Rebate program, which helps cover the cost of installing EV charging infrastructure for businesses and public entities in the utility’s service territory. It also received a $320,000 grant from the Illinois EPA’s Driving a Cleaner Illinois Program.

That funding flows from Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, which directs state support toward the installation and maintenance of publicly available Level 2 and DC fast‑charging stations.

James Jennings, acting director of Illinois EPA, said that “over 100 state-funded charging locations are now available to motorists and a total of 300 will be online once construction is completed.”
