Elon wants to rebuild exploded Cybertruck, Canadian cons, other bizarre EV news

Looking at all the Tesla protests and Twitter hacker attacks, consider this: Tesla "mothership" servers have the capability to remotely connect to any Tesla car anywhere at any time and execute any code on the car. Tesla has used this capability many times in the past, including for downloading logs from crashed Tesla cars remotely and also for disabling DC charging capability of Tesla cars that were declared to be in "salvage" status. Model 3 and Y cars also have the capability to "run" the motors in "idle" to generate excess heat to be used for battery and interior preconditioning if the heat pump does not work or is insufficient.

Now imagine what kind of mess would happen if some hacker would hack into Tesla, set all cars to "salvage" mode, disable DC charging or make all motors generate as much heat as possible (while disabling coolant circulation). Tesla is the only car company in the world that has such glaring security voulnerability and they have it by design.

I’ve been involved in the electric vehicle transition in one way or another since 1997, and have covered the industry as a journalist since 2008. You can catch more of my work on Quick Charge and The Heavy Equipment Podcast with Mike Switzer.
