Tesla’s new Sentry Mode has been available for a few months now and it’s starting to prove useful to deter break-ins, but it’s also capturing other crazier and crazier things.
Building on its previously released dashcam feature, Tesla enabled the use of more cameras around the vehicle and activated a “stand-by” parking mode.
The feature became Sentry Mode, which also includes an alarm and notification system to deter thieves even more — efficiently creating a system to watch over Tesla vehicles when their owners are not around.
It was first developed to address a growing problem with break-ins that Tesla owners were dealing with especially in California, but you film enough and you start capturing other things that have nothing to do with break-ins.
Some of the things Sentry Mode is now capturing are quite strange.
For example, a Model 3 owner got a Sentry Mode alert because someone was using his brand new car as photoshoot stage for her a dog (via u/maghikal on Reddit):
Obviously, it’s rude to touch anyone’s car without their permission, but putting your dog on the hood of a vehicle owned by someone you don’t know is a whole new level of rudeness.
Darin Lee, another Model 3 owner, also captured another crazy scene.
He was charging at the Supercharger station in Ann Arbor when a Cadillac SUV pulled in front of his car and a bunch of teens started throwing eggs at his Tesla:
The front camera of his Model 3 captured the whole incident. Since he was sitting in the car, it was most likely captured with the dashcam feature on which Sentry Mode is based.
As you can see on the video, the teens realized halfway through the egging drive-by that Lee was actually sitting inside the car.
Lee was worried that the teens targeted his Model 3 for being a Tesla or an electric vehicle. The police told him that it wasn’t the first incident at the Tesla Supercharger.
We have previously reported on anti-Tesla pickup truck drivers taking over Supercharger stations and we have seen Tesla vehicles being vandalized in the past.
They are trying to identify the teens because Lee says that the egging actually resulted in hundreds of dollars in paint damages.
