VW teases production version of all-electric ID hatchback ahead of launch

VW is teasing the production version of its all-electric ID hatchback ahead of the start of pre-orders next month and the unveiling of the production vehicle in September.

The electric hatchback is expected to be the first next-gen electric vehicle based on VW’s new MEB platform.

VW is expected to release several more production versions based on the platform and a series of ‘I.D.’ concept vehicles that it has been unveiling over the last few years.

Last month, the German automaker announced the ID all-electric hatchback pre-orders will open on May 8.

Ahead of the start of reservations, VW has launched webpages in some markets to count down the days before people can place a reservation.

On those webpages, VW has released a few teaser images of the production version:

More information about the ID is expected to be released when pre-orders open next month, but VW has already been releasing some key features over the last year.

Stackmann previously said that the vehicle will come to Europe at the end of 2019 with “up to 550 km of range” (WLTP), and it will go on sale for “the price of a modern Golf Diesel”, which means a little less than $30,000.

While the vehicle is expected to start at less than $30,000 and to have “up to 550 km” of range, those specs could be for the base version and top-of-the-line version respectively.

Christian Senger, VW’s Head of Product Line for E-Mobility, recently said that the vehicle will be offered in 3 battery configurations.

The two other versions are expected to have a WLTP range of about 330km (205 miles) and 450 km (280 miles).

Other information that has leaked in the past few months includes the option of 7.2 kW and 11 kW onboard chargers for level 2 charging and the DC fast-charging capability will support a charge rate up to 125 kW.

Electrek’s Take

As the first vehicle based on VW’s MEB platform, on which the company appears to be basing its whole future, the ID electric hatchback is going to be a very important vehicle.

So far so good.

The specs we know about look on point and if the pricing is indeed “less than $30,000”, it would be quite competitive on the market.

Now we need to see the design. We expect quite a lot of updates from the original prototype, which is already several years old.

I like what I am seeing on those teaser images. It could really be a Golf-size sleek-looking hatchback, which I think would sell well in an all-electric version and would convince many more people to go electric at the right price.
